I was exhausted by the end of the day with Amanda. Seeing Scrabble take two steps forward healed my heart, but only enough for it to be a tiny bit less painful when he took three large leaps behind him.

It was only an evaluation, but I’d never been so destroyed by hope.

My pink and white checkered Vans brushed the asphalt Scrabble dragged me across hours prior as I crossed the parking lot without him. Wet spots were forming around me on the ground where the rain threatened to pour.

It was both a relief and a curse. I needed to hide the tears threatening to spill down my flushed face. Some days, I wished we never adopted him. Then, I would be saved from this pain.

My Mustang sang when my keys pointed in its direction. Unlike the singsong of a classic unlocking horn, my car only chattered from the mechanics Mason customed. The rear taillights gleamed through the setting sun, gaining a weak smile from me.

“Glad you feel pretty today.” I rubbed the back tail of the vintage car.

“Thanks.” I jumped in surprise as a voice spoke up from behind me. “It’s a struggle.”

I whipped around with my car keys tucked between my knuckles. Mid-swing, my wrist was caught and wrenched back down. I violently choked down the lump in my throat as a few raindrops drizzled down the face that held those mysterious eyes.

Quincy Battles.

“You forgot your wallet inside. I didn’t want you to lose those pictures again,” Quinn explained, lowering my wrist further and loosening her grip. She stood there for a moment, raising her eyes from my keys to my red-rimmed eyes. “Were you going to key me, babe?”

“No.” I hid my hand behind my back and snatched the pastel wallet from her with a forced huff of air. “Thanks. I needed that.”

“You’re welcome.” Quinn matched my attitude with no issues, arching her brow. “Tough day?”

“You were there.” I narrowed my eyes. “So, yeah, it was pretty freaking tough.”

“Did I make it tough for you, or are you upset Scrabble isn’t performing well?” Quinn asked, unfazed by the rain falling over us. I wondered if she was used to riding on her bike in the rain. “Sally, he did very well for a dog with his issues. I’ve been here only a few months, but he’s not the worst dog in this town.”

“When did you become a dog expert?” I scoffed. “A few months doing community service, and you think you’re a pro?”

“I never said I was a pro.” Quinn squinted slightly. “I’m only here because I have to be. Might I remind you, you’re the one who refuses to get to know me as more than your parking lot buddy.”

My shoulders slumped. “That’s not true.”

“Really?” Quinn laughed.

“Really!” My voice cracked with frustration.

I didn’t know why I was so riled up by this conversation. Quinn had this way of messing with my head without trying. Anytime she was near me, really—looking at me. She was in my space, and all I wanted to do was scream at her until she either slapped me across the face or kissed me.
